The Republic of Peru, also commonly known as Peru, is situated in western South America. It is bordered by water bodies, the Pacific Ocean in the west and the Amazon river in the east. The country is biodiverse in nature as it ranges from arid plains to peaks and also consists of a rainforest. Peru is a multi-ethnic country. The main language of the country is Spanish but there are various local languages spoken.

Tourism is one of the major industries of the country, after mining and fishing. It is also one of the fastest growing industries. The country sees a larger growth in tourism than any other country in South America. It has various places of cultural importance and archaeological importance. Peru also consists of a number of adventurous activities and beaches.

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu is a 15th-century citadel built by the Incan empire. It is situated on a mountain ridge of 2,430 meters above sea level. The main part of Machu Pichu contains only of the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. The other parts were built around it in the later days. The parts were built in the classical Inca style, with dry stone walls that were polished. They are divided into the upper and lower towns. The upper town consists of temples and the lower town consists of warehouses. Machu Picchu is also a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the new seven wonders of the world.

Like many other stones in South America, the Intihuatana stone is also one of the ritual stones. During the period of the Incan empire, they believed that the sun was held in its place during its annual path. Every year, at midday on the 11th November and 30th January, it would stand exactly above the pillar casting no shadow.

The Temple of the Sun

The temple of the sun is a semi-circular temple. It is built of Ashlar stones. There is a serpent’s door which opens into a series of 16 pools and has a good view of the Huanna Picchu. The temple also has two trapezoidal windows in which the constellations Llamacnawin, Llama, Unallamacha, Machacuay, and the star Pachapacariq Chaska can be viewed at night.

The Nazca lines

The Nazca lines are ancient geoglyphs which are found in the Nazca Desert, Peru. They are also known as a UNESCO world heritage site. The largest figure of the Nazca line is about 370 meters long. These lines are a mixture of cultural drawings of the Nazca culture, simple lines, and geometric shapes. It also has a number of zoomorphic designs of animals. The lines and diagrams were believed to be seen only from aircrafts but later on, they found out that they could be seen from the nearby peaks and foothills too.

The Nazca lines are believed to be drawn using simple tools. One of the methods of drawing these lines was by using the shallow trench. The lines that were formed were about 10 and 15 cm deep. These were done by taking away the iron oxide coated pebbles that covered the surface and exposing the light colored clay earth. This, in turn, produces lines and contrasts with the land surface. The layer below the surface contains lime which helps to prevent it from erosion.

Cusco is a city in Peru which is the capital of the Cusco region. This city is the historic capital of the Inca Empire. Cusco is also one of UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. The city is now one of the major tourist destinations with about 2 million visitors a year.

The main tourist attractions include the wall of Sacsayhuamán, remains of the palace of the Incas, Qurikancha and the Temple of the Virgins of the Sun. Cusco is also famous for its Spanish colonial architecture and the most important of this is the Cathedral of Santo Domingo.

The Amazon rainforest covers about 74% of the land in Peru. The country has the highest percentage of land area protected in National parks and reserves. The Peruvian Amazon is one of the rainforests on earth which has been untouched and thus is a popular site for tourists interested in nature. It is divided into two: The High and the Lower Jungle. With the high jungle being accessible to tourists and Lower being isolated from them. The jungle is diverse and has various plant and animal species. The national parks that are famous are Manu National Park, Rio Abiseo National Park, Tambopata-Candamo Protected area and Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.

Beaches of Peru

The coastline of Peru is about 2,414 kilometer with a large number of Beaches. This is one of the most popular tourism in Peru and also a major pastime for the local people. The most popular beach area is the Máncora beach.

The Mancora Beach includes a town and a beach resort. The Mancora town has the Pan-American Highway as its main street. The beach is popularly known for its turquoise waters and white sand. It also has good waves and hence makes a good surfing destination. The winds at the beach are also famous for Kitesurfing. The beach is extremely popular and so a movie has been made about it: Mancora.
